Plans for a Hot Rod Car

Post by kcarchitect »

Came across this image and couldn't hep but think it could make a killer derby car. Looking for some feedback/thoughts on the un-forseen challenges? On the surface it looks fairly straightforward, what am I missing?

Too much wood if speed is your goal. Would be attractive if interested in a Best Design category.

Was thinking that I would attempt to make the main cab hollow, other than the area right above the rear wheel so that it can be weighted properly. The hood and the add on sides I'd do out of basswood.

Do a Hershey bar ladder car as your platform, then craft a super light balsa wood body around it. You can still make a pretty fast car using that approach, trust me. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7490&hilit=Hot+dog

That is wicked. The only thing I see is that it might change in looks quite a bit, once the belly of the car is raised to mid wheel.

That was the reason for adding the sides, they will hang down lower to give it the dragging look. They will essentially be for looks only as the inside of the car will be mostly hollow.

Revised the plans a bit, added outlines for the portions of the car I would make hollow. Will cut all of the windows, the top, and bottom. Added a few more detail lines for body curves, pinstriping lines, etc. Going to try a toner transfer onto the block to give me a guide to cut out.

The lowered sides need to be clear of the sides of the rail so that it does not drag on the side of the rail. This usually means that they need to be outside of the inner edges of the wheel treads.

Otherwise, nice job ... really nice job!

looking at your car build plans kcarchitect
will your rule set .. let you run the car with the front wheels past the starting pin.
Noted: the red lines in your plan is that for the 7 inch block ?

I'd really like to see you build this hot rod.. so if it's just for fun go for it!

Early Build photos, Car is mostly hollow. Roof and windows are infilled with paperwood, axles and tie rods will be added with piano wire, found a dragster type engine with air cleaner that will go in the hole in the hood.
