Tyrone Malone's Super Boss

Post by whodathunkit »

Photo of the 1974 customized Kenworth conventional.

After seeing some photos of the Super Boss truck on the web.. I knew this was one truck i'd like to build some day!
So with a little art work I drew up a pattern.. However to keep the truck in true scale with the wheels it's only 10 inches long with dual back wheels.
Pattern that I came up with:
Image

Normally I build truck's on a thin frames as most here have seen in some of the truck build topics.
For this truck build the frame will be on a thick ladder type frame as you'll see in the photos.
Reason is so I would have a way to make the front air scoop plus have a way to install the rear fenders to the frame.
So to start the build off I'll skip the frame and move on to the front fenders.
Image
Image
Here's the frame with the front fenders being fitted for making the air scoop.
Image
Next I'll move on to making the rear fenders off of my pattern that I hope will work out!
Image
The thickness of the rear fender shape to the frame.
Image
Image
From here I'll draw out reference lines for lining up the top view shapes.
Image
View of the frame and rear fenders before shaping:

Shape of rear fenders top view:

More shaping of the rear fender flares.
Image
Image
For making the sloped bed behind the cab I'll be using a kit block and then cutting out the center to make the sunken part of the bed.
Image
Image
I'll then sand down the center cut out and glue it back in to make that detail of the truck bed.

Well that's all for tonight.. More to come later!

Thanks Vitamin K,
Didn't think I'd be able to start the build tonight due to the bad weather!
We're iced over with lots of power outages in the OK panhandle and Kansas areas.

Luckily were still have our power
but my poor trees look like sagging popsicles.
With over an inch of ice.

Yuck, stay warm and stay safe!

OTOH, if the lights stay on, that's some great workshop time! ;)

Looking good, we are all iced over here in KC as well. Trying to use this week to paint. How are you doing on weight? Any plans to hollow out some of those larger pieces?

I'm planing on drilling out the bottom side of the fenders to drop more wood weight.
For the cab it will be an open cab with plastic for the windshield and windows.
The hood will also be hollowed out.

Hope you still have power ares has been off and on all day.

Here you go kcarchitect!
I'm at 3.8 oz with out the hood block.. however the block is not the hood it's just there for looks right now.
Image
To give you and idea on how much the truck weighs with out a hood hollowed out it's at 4.8 oz.
Image
My plan for the hood will be to hollow it out like what seen in the photo below and then cover it up with the grill .
Here's and idea of approximately how much weight can be lost at 4.1 oz.
Image
Image
Here is a bottom view of the frame and rear fender detail.. with some drill work to be done to it drop some more wood weight.
Image
And then a view of what the open cab will look like..
With some sanding details to be done to the cab roof and a fire wall and center bar for the windshield to be made.

More Photo's:
I left off showing the cab still needing work for the fire wall and windshield area.. hear's a top view looking into the open cab.
Image
And a front view of the hood and grill cover.. still looking to make a cut out grill front for the details however!
Image
A view of what it looks like looking down on top of the truck.
Image
And a where I'm at with it for tonight as far as weight at 5.0 oz.

I have some 1/16" and 1/8" sheets of basswood .
I'm planing on using to make the side for the wings out of.
Maybe even balsa for the centers of the wings. And for the poles for the back wing maybe do
cut outs of basswood.

Not sure.. So I'll try pine and burch first!

Moving on with a little shop time for making the grill parts.
Image
For this detail the back has the three bars in the grill the outer part has no bars..
from there I'll glue the two together and insert small wooden strips to make the raised grill bar look to the grill.
Here's a view of it so far just setting in place.. the bars will be thin'ed down on the sides and then the thickness of the grill belt sanded down some more.
Image
I don't know if you can tell from this model box photo that the rear wing has two air foils in the wing!
Image
For making the air foils for the rear wing I'm going to try to shape them on the belt sander for an air plane wing look to them.
Image
One large one and a smaller one for the front & back air foils.
Image
From the model box photo you'll see a center in the wing with the ends as well.
For making the wing center and ends I'll be cutting out the air foils to pass threw these parts to hold them tight when glued and the ends cut off and sanded flush to the sides of the wing.
photos of pattern and then wing test fitted:
Image
Image
Still got a few more wings to go.. That's all for tonight!

I left off showing the back wing being built. Here's a better photo of the truck showing the two air foils in the back wing.
Image
The end's are now cut off and sanded down:
Image
Next I'll be moving on to building the poles for holding the rear wing.. to build the poles i'll be stack cutting 1/8' ply wood.
What I came up with for the pattern.
Image
Test fitting the poles to the rear wing:

Image
Well here it is from a side view and front view:

Once more on the scale:

Getting closer to having the all the wing details done!

No Way !!!
Vitamin K , I've seen some of the cars you make and the just as cool ! ( I can't wait to see your car with the lights and how your going to do it! )

I'm getting closer.. I just made the front wing for the hood with the drilled hole brackets.( No Photos at this time ..I will share them later!)
I have the two wings over the front fenders to go yet then some more sanding detail work before starting the paint job.
Plus the fifth wheel cover plate to make and the small lower window to cut out in the right door that I forgot to do.
I'm not looking forward to trying this paint job with a brush.. and i still don't have that air brush I've been looking at and hope to get some day!
I've also got the rear details to do and I've been thinking about doing the wheelie & push bars that are seen in the model box photo above as well..
to dress up the back end of my frame that sticks down and out like a sore thumb ..( just for looks !)
Well see what happens!
