Used Tracks
Used Tracks
I was talking to a dad from a different Pack that does not do pinewood derby right now (brand new pack). I am going to talk to our pack to see if we can loan them our track however they were looking at trying to get a track. Being a brand new pack they do not have a lot of funds and was wondering if there is anywhere they can look for used tracks. I told them to keep an eye out on eBay but right now we cannot find anything. I gave them some plans to build a track but they are nervous about that since they have not good carpenters that can help them in their pack (mine either including me ).
So, anyone know of a good source to find used tracks? Wood or aluminum are ok but the would like a sloping track (not an S-track) going to a flat section.

Re: Used Tracks
Did see one on e-bay recently. Otherwise I have little to offer other than the possibility of running a multi pack derby. This is what our pack does with a smaller pack in town. They share all costs and are eternally grateful for the opportunity. Makes for a bigger event with a little cross-town (healthy) rivalry. Kids seem to enjoy it.

Re: Used Tracks
You can try checking with other packs in your district. Maybe a pack got a nice new track and would be willing to give away their older track. Of course, the older track may need some TLC, but it is a start.

Re: Used Tracks
I'd recommend a new Freedom aluminum track from Piantedosi Oars, their two lane 40 foot track is very reasonable and the Pack can add lanes as it grows.
As for raising funds, a few have mentioned local car dealers donating the tracks, if you're creative you'll find a way. My Father volunteered to be the Cub Master of our pack when I was in Scouts and his first order of business was to raise some much needed funds.
He built a huge raffle ticket barrel and my Mom used her sewing machine to perforate the tickets, then he solicited donations from all the local businesses for small appliances, repair work, ect. The Scouts had incentives to sell tickets as there were prizes for the top sellers.
The raffle was a huge success and it seemed like every family ended up winning something nice in the drawing, after the first year it became an annual event.
Not too stray too far off topic, but unless just the right deal works out on a used track, you'd probably be better served by buying a new track you can expand in the future.

Re: Used Tracks
If they do deside to build one, there are some other plans out there that have different levels of difficulty. Also plans for an electronic finish line detector.
Check my site for two track plans and a parrellel detector.

Re: Used Tracks
I have been trying to decide whether to try and build one to use as a test track at home, or to buy one. It sounds as though I can get materials to build a 2 or 3 lane track for around $150.
I also found this web site:

I have been asking around to see if anyone is familiar with their tracks, but haven't had any luck yet. The price seems right.......

We are purchasing one from quality tracks. It is currently being built and can give you an idea of what it is like once I receive it. I did get a sample of the wood and that is top quaility.
Re: Used Tracks
Dan,
Judging from info on site it appears to be a quality track, 9 ply birch veneer plywood with an all birch core. Lane guides are made from a 1/4" thick 5 ply birch veneer plywood. Can't beat it for the price. Aluminium backing plates, would have to see them in order to judge quality and design. The price is right! WIRL endorsed it, must count for something. Anyway, my 2 cents.

Re: Used Tracks
I read the post on the board about finding a used track and I wanted to let you guys know that our pack has outgrown our track. We went from a 3 lane to a six lane track. We would probably be willing to sell our old track which is just 4 years old. It is an aluminum Best Track, three lane.
If anyone wants more information please send me an e-mail.
Thanks,

Thanks,
We are an Awana club who needs a track. Email me the price and if it's still available. My email is: pjohnson32696@yahoo.com. We are a fairly new club with a medium budget.
Thanks!!
