Disaster has truck,
I just spent the last hour or so, trying to get that darn car to go fast. what a nightmare.
I think i will just take it apart for the weight and try again.

That thing looks as light as a feather !!! Is there any weight (or room for it) in there ?

i would love to repeat the build shape, I like it myself alot. This one I really liked the shape to it.
But the weight placement is junk ! I'm not so good at standard wheel base. really had not done it in years. not sure what i was thinking to go so darn far back with it !
Just that one race earlier this year with standard.
i'll be back in a week, Hope to have something then to show ya all.

I can't see how you got 5 oz. in that skinny shape, let alone a decent COG!!! Was it coated with epoxy for strength? I'd be afraid of snapping it in my hand! I do like it though. Our cars the past 2 or 3 years have been about 1/4" thick, maybe we'll go thinner this year!!

Re: 2010 Test cars
Its stiff, its all in the wood you use !!! the wood was dense also.
no glue or nothing for strength, its rigid !
But I went to far back for the weight. But I might have a fix for the car yet, we will see. But will do a few more like this. I like the shape and profile, just got to get the weight right.
just been to long since I really got into standard wheel base cars.
I removed some weight out of the back, 2 oz and will move forward and see what it will do, if it works, ill go with plates.
The only reason I go so thin is to get more concentration of weight. 4.5 oz of it. But this one, only 4oz.
As you sand it down, you will notice if you can go thinner or not, stop if you feel it start to weeken or you think its about to flex.
Again, it's in the wood you use !

Re: 2010 Test cars
In previous years we used straight vertical grain blocks but we ran out of wood after last year (I think). Since this is our last year I may just use what ever we have. Maybe!!! An ultra-thin car could be interesting!
With so little wood, how do you think changes in temp/humidity will affect the shape of the car and the alignment?? If you build it when the air is dry and race on a rainy day the car could twist or warp. Like you said, it's all in the wood!

Re: 2010 Test cars
Sporty, are you referring to the grain pattern and density of the pinewood, or do you mean you are using a wood other than pine? (If so, what kind of wood?)sporty wrote:Its stiff, its all in the wood you use !!! the wood was dense also.
So that we might save ourselves from repeating your mistake, where was the COM relative the rear axle?sporty wrote:But I went to far back for the weight.
Re: 2010 Test cars
Just regular pine bsa blocks, gotta be picky and get a bunch and puck through them.
Have not had one break yet and the extended wheel base thin like that are fairly fast.

Our two cents...FatSebastian wrote:So that we might save ourselves from repeating your mistake, where was the COM relative the rear axle?
We use a standard wheelbase and run our COM 3/8" - 1/2" in front of the axle. We find this to be pretty aggressive and even on a smooth aluminum track we require a lot of steer into the rail on the front dominant wheel to overcome the dreaded "wiggle of death." We find that the more aggressive weight placement still makes for a faster car that overcomes the added friction of the dominant wheel on the rail.
Re: 2010 Test cars
Had the 2nd pack work shop day, things went well.
Been keeping very busy lately.
Here are a few cars i'm working on. I want to thank Andy Lester. These are some really neat cars. They look great and I'm really pleased with the looks of them.
I'm working on some other cars right now also. To much to do and not enough time.

Sporty,
Those are some fine looking car bodies you have there!
I hope they run as good as they look. I look forward to seeing them run soon.
Congrats and Nice Job!

Re: 2010 Test cars
Sporty, I noticed that this thin car was a little thicker where the axles go in. In your opinion, how thin can one safely make the block in the vicinity of the axles?
