Kurtis-Kraft 500C
Hi Fellas,
It's been a while since I've had a project to share with you, but I've finally gotten around to photographing the Kurtis that I mentioned ages ago. And here it is...
The car is modeled after the 1956 Filter Queen Special driven to an 8th place finish by Rodger Ward in the 1956 Indianapolis 500. I used the following components from a 1:24 Revell model kit to detail the car: the suspension, display wheels, grille, fuel filler cap, engine, exhaust, steering wheel, driver, driver seat and decals. The engine has been significantly modified to better represent the twin overhead cam four cylinder Offenhauser powerplant.
The car is painted with Duplicolor lacquer and was weathered using both an artist brush and an air brush. It was finished with a clear matte enamel.
The wheels are for display only and are fitted into the axel holes with plastic rod sized to match the BSA axel. The wheel base is altered for appearance, and the axel holes are drilled into the ends of dowel rod. The car is intended to run in the Open Class at our Pack and District events so the extended overall length and elimination of the axel slots are not a problem.
Thanks for letting me share another project with you all.
Brad

That is beautiful!
I love seeing a weathered race car. They look much more real and you have captured that look 100%
VERY NICE!!!

Re: Kurtis-Kraft 500C
Thanks for the kind words guys. This car is my favorite of the ones I've built to date. It was a long process from start to finish. The body shape turned out to be a lot more difficult than I expected, so there were plenty of times during the build when I would set it aside in frustration. Everything came together nicely after the body shape was sorted out.
Andy, I couldn't agree more with you about the 'beauty' of a weathered race car. This is the first one that I mustered enough courage to give it a try, and I think it turned out okay. I may have weathered it a little too much for an Indy 500 car, but I'll mark that down as a lesson learned for the next car.
Regards
