Hardwood Derby Cars

Post by BallBoy » Sat Aug 06, 2011 3:42 pm

I was looking around my garage at the scrap pieces of hardwood I have laying around and decided to put some of them to good use. These cars are made of walnut, cherry, soft maple and purpleheart. I planed the scrap down so that when laminated together they would measure 1.75 inches. Once I had the pieces laminated together and cut into a square block the size of a standard BSA block they weighed in at around 8 oz. After cutting the profiles I didn't add any weight because I built them for show rather than speed. The final weight of each car is between 3.6 and 4.2 oz.

Yup, those are some great-lookin' cars.
Thought about using scrap black walnut, oak & cedar for 'demo' cars... but all my shop time is divided between Wife projects, Freedom Pens & PWD time w/ parents & kids.

My wife started a new support group... Widows of the Pinewood Derby.

Very nice. I like the walnut stripe on the side of the car. Is the center stripe basswood or a different species? It looks a bit lighter than the wood on the outside of the walnut.

All the light colored wood is Basswood. During the laminating process the center piece between the two Walnut pieces appeared to be close in color. Only after shaping the body did the difference in color of lighter Basswood become noticeable with wider pieces. Thank you for comment.

BallBoy & FIRENZE,

Your Hardwood Derby cars are truly works of art guys !!!

While surfing the web.. As I do from time to time looking for cool car designs
that I myself would like to try and make out of the hardwoods some day..

I ran across this site that has a cool looking Hard maple & Bulivian rose wood racer.
Thought i'd share the site info on this Rose wood racer.
Sence you guys are in to hard wood derby cars. ;)
