Ford GT racer, carved from pine block

This year was the over the top year for hand carving. My daughter had a matchbox car based on a Ford GT variant she wanted to make. Started with two blocks, cut one up into fender strips, and glued them in place with dowels. Used the Dremmel with a large wood rasp bit to route out the wheel clearances and hollow out the underside. Then we went to work with with gouge, chisel, file and sandpaper. The grill consisted of actual air channels I drilled up through the hood scoops / underside to reduce front surface area.





We got the starting plans from an earlier post on this site here: http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... it=ford+gt. Our front profile is off a bit because the nose was shortened to increase the wheelbase to the maximum allowed, but hopefully still recognizable.

Car ran very well in it's first five heats (only four counted as they had to re-run one due to the officials having the computer set wrong.) The last two heats did not go so well - I posted in the track section about how the wheel got gouged, which I wonder if it was bad luck, something wrong with the design, or a problem with the track... you can read here if you're interested: http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... +gt#p64163

Nice craftsmanship on the GT racer. We constructed one with a dual opening in the hood and a second with a single hood opening. The body has quiet a few contours that make it a fun and challenging build.
