Powder Puff Derby 2010

Post by having_wandered » Tue Nov 27, 2012 3:47 pm

Our first derby race.

My oldest daughter has always loved horses. When presented with the opportunity for her first Girl Scout Powder Puff derby, she came up with this drawing...

After a talk, we settled on doing a horse's head car. This was her next drawing...

I had never done a Pinewood derby race before so I started reading up and got out a practice block of pine to try my hand at carving:

The practice block gave me some ideas and helped settle design elements like the ears and eyes.
Then I began work on the car-

And the finished car:

I think the car ended up being .5 oz underweight but she did win 1st place for Daisys and we were up against another girl whose dad was cubmaster or something for a local Cubscout pack.

This year, she's competing in Awana and said she wants her car to be a platter of cupcakes!

:welcome: having_wandered! Your ability to sculpt an aerodynamic horse's head (twice!) from your daughter's drawing is both skillful and imaginative.

Thanks y'all. That was my first car and first attempt at a wood carving so I was somewhat concerned on what the final product was going to look like. Had my daughter do some sanding and the painting. I have 3 kids in the races now. It sounds like the Girlscouts may do another Powderpuff derby this year and if that's the case we'll have Powderpuff, Awana and BSA. Think we may run a couple "blocks" ;-)

Love the color, is that a metallic blue or something? Its a wonderful car. If this was your first attempt at carving you must have some woodworking or drawing skills as it looks really good. Did you use hand carving tools or an electric tools?

Thanks!
It is Cobalt Blue from the Rustoleum Metallic line which was something I had on hand otherwise we might have ended up buying brown or purple. The star is just white latex semigloss with stick on fingernail jewels added for a litle sparkle. I used the dremel for rough shaping and an exacto knife and folded sandpaper especially in the detail areas like the rims of the eyes.
