A Tale of Three Cars

Post by Noskills »

Just started work on the 2014 Line-up here at the Noskills team. Here are some initial photos:

Image
Here are all three in primed. All are 1/4 in thick with extended front ends.
Image
Here is my daughter learning to dremel. She wanted fastest car possible so I suggested the Sporty Spoon.
Image
Daddy does NOT sand! (the kids' cars)
Image
Sporty Spoon taking shape (thanks for the photo guidelines Sporty!)
Image
All primed and ready for paint. My son has the somewhat angular one. He is going to put a Minecraft sticker on his for a Minecraft theme.
Image
My fender car, showing the COM. I was inspired by the mind America fender cars and this is my attempt at emulation.

Just painted a few days ago and will post follow up shots. They are all drying. The boys cars are blue and my daughters is competition orange. We cut a tiger stripe pattern stencil out and will apply next week.

So far so good.

Seth,
I see your Daughter is not useing a clamp or a vise to hold the car down to the work bench
while she is sanding on it.

So she must be useing some really smart woodworking skills.. or something!
As I see she has her PPE on also.

Did she use some double sided woodworkes tape under the car or something
or did she use some wood screws from the under side of the work bench
into the car to fasten it down to the bench?

If I were to try sanding a car in this way with a dremel 3000 0r 4000
it would really take flight and fly off the bench.

All's I can say is she has some Woodworking skills!
:scratching: How did she do that?

Whoda.

Whoa,

The photo was a bit staged as an "action shot". In reality I was the human vise holding the cars and instructing her step by step while she worked. We had matching dustmasks but different eye protection. That would make a great photo next time-just need my wife to shoot it. I dont like to use the vise once the cars are so thin.

I really thought that she was useing a wood workers double sided tape
under the car to help hold it down on the work bench.

I use the tapes alot with stack cutting thin woods on the scroll saw
and when sanding thin woods on a belt sander..
to keep my fingers off the belt..by sticking the thin wood to a thicker one.

Tell her that this is a good tip to help her out with the sanding and to give it a try some time.
And that I'm looking forward to seeing photos of her Tiger Stripe car. :)

Mr. Noskills, as I recall reading in a different post you said, "When I build a car for me it's all about speed". It would appear Little Miss Toback is on that same path. Best of Luck to her.

A little color added:
Image
My sons car. His will get clear coated and then a vinyl Minecraft sticker.
Image
My daughter Tiger car. Its got one coat of clear, then we are giving a full week to dry before putting on the homemade tiger pattern stencil.
Image
My car in the same blue as my sons'. We are using auto paint from the rattle can. It really did go on nice and thin and dried really fast. Looking forward to seeing the results of the 2 part clear. Mine will likely get some white racing stripes.

It's obvious the Noskills Team doesn't lack energy. Those cars are beautiful and I know they're going to be fast. Best of Luck.

Well Done, 'Team Noskills'!

Those are some really nice lookin' cars Seth. It's obvious how much you've been able to leverage from the Mid-America, and from Sporty's methodology to make some really strong designs with your kids.

And you KNOW I wanna see that Minecraft car, once it's finished.

We might do a Spoon this year as well. I also need to practice drilling holes with this 'Block' I got over the Summer.

Keep us updated on the builds! Really good job on the veneers too. :bigups:

Here are the latest updates. Used the 2 part car clear coat. Well worth the extra money, I am a believer. It took the so-so blue auto paint and brought it to life. These photos don't do the cars justice.

Now, we used the homemade stencil on a dry day and prayed to the stencil gods, then clear coated. My daughters tiger cars looks like it is going leap up and bite you :O :

These cars looks so great I hate to mess them up with graphite.

Little drying, some decals, racing stripes little ScratchX, turtle wax and these guys will be ready for some wheels!

The cars are looking great thus far Seth. I am starting to think that one of my kids is leaning toward a Despicable Me 'minion' car, which will probably look great using the Sporty Spoon design. The Tiger car would be great for a Tiger Cub.

WOW !!!!! The scouts are going to love looking at that Tiger car. How about building a cage to set over it. That would make a great picture. Send that beauty to Maximum Velocity.
