Introducing Team Scrollsawer - 2014 (RESULTS ADDED)

Post by Scrollsawer »

Just returned from weigh-in, the night before our PWD tomorrow morning. Took some work, but we managed to make yet another build deadline by the skin of our teeth.

This years' line-up...

'Hold the Relish'

Batting 2nd, we have...'Cowabunga'

Next we are happy to present 'Back from the Dead' (this one we broke in two during the build)

And finally we proudly unveil the 7oz. (unlimited division entry from my daughter) 'Bedazzled'!

So fellow DT'ers, tell us what you think. :D

Great day at the races today.

Image

1st and 2nd Overall in the Derby:

The one boy and his Hot Dog car went for a Design Award (you can't have both speed and best design in our Pack), so we entered the hot dog car at 4.3 ounces. This is an exercise in 'friction' vs. 'weight' as an influential factor, and friction reduction won out, hands down. The hot dog came in 2nd Overall in the Speed Division...at 4.3 ounces! FS, we used puffy paint for the mustard. Like what you'd see on girls t-shirts when they do crafts at home. Got it at Hobby Lobby.

My Den:

Overall, we won 6 trophies, and came in 1st in every Division we entered (except my twin with the hot dog car who always has to race his brother, so one boy will always come in 2nd). The reason you don't see the 6th trophy is because I elected to go to the race administrator before the scoring commenced, and I took my own orange 'back from the dead' car out of trophy consideration. I was really just racing an adult car for fun, and wanted some other boy (or adult) to have a chance for a trophy in the 'Open' Division race. So technically we swept 1st in every division we entered, including 1st Overall for our second straight year.

...and yes Whoda, Cowabunga was the Grand Champion at the cattle auction. 1st Place in Pack. 8)

Good day at the races.

Puffy paint from Hobby Lobby for the mustard on the Hot Dog.. Nice touch! ;)

Just when I put my track boots on to do a few hot laps around the pasture..
Look what showed up to chase me around.. Dances with Coyote.

Congratulations! Those turned out wonderfully. I'm inspired, knowing I can let my kids use non-toxic acrylics and still get such a wonderful finish.

Vitamin K,

The results we got painting the hot dog car were achieved as follows:

Note: Wait one day between painting and applying the clear coat.

1) Final sanding of the balsa dog and bun with 400 grit sandpaper

2) Apply one primer coat (krylon indoor/outdoor white primer spray can, available at Home Dept/Lowes,etc.)

3) Foam brush the acrylics on (2-3 coats, no sanding)

4) 1-2 light coats of krylon 'short cuts' clear GLOSS (they also have a matte finish, but use gloss)

Gotta admit, the acrylic hot dog came out better than I was expecting.

Out of curiosity, did your Pack hold its Pinewood Derby in an RC car racetrack?

Yep K, there's a place about 30 minutes from us that does races. It was a lot of fun!

Scrollsawer,

Naw.. I took that run anyway.. (Backwards doing the Texas 2 step!)
This was just 1 out of 6 coyotes that stuck around for a photo op and they are not my pets at all.

Out here there are several packs of coyotes ..
you can hear houling all around the house at sun down and late into the nights.
As there are several feed lots and hog farms in the area miles away though.

This is the first time I ever seen some come calling this close to the house though!

Very nice job on the cars Team Scrollsawer,
and once more Congrats on the Wins.

Mark

Scott, the cars look great. The cow spoon was fast and cute. The hotdog looks great. So what were the trophies for? I got first for speed for the cow, first for design for the hotdog, first in outlaw for bejeweled. What about the last two? Congrats! Love the new track record too.
