Pinewood Derbymobile

Our pack is scheduled to have a cubmobile race in August (after being postponed from June due to inclement weather). I couldn't leave well enough alone thought I would build a pinewood derby sized cubmobile. The first issue I needed to tackle was the size of the car. Pinewood derby cars and cubmobiles aren't anywhere near the same scale so some liberties were taken to extend the length of the car well beyond what you would find in a cubmobile. My miniature 2x4's ended up being about 5/16 x 5/8.

Once I had figured out a rough size, I needed to come up with a way to make it heavy enough and still look like a cubmobile. I decided to cut a groove in the chassis for the ballast.


Then cover the groove with a piece of pine so that the weight was concealed.

Even with a strip of lead wire the main components only weigh 3.34 oz.

I glued the chassis to the two axle pieces and held them together with spring clamps.

Now with a seat and seatback the weight is up to 3.58 oz.

Here is the car with accessories added before final sanding and paint.


I painted the car with a paint scheme similar to one of the cubmobiles our pack built.



I still may add a rope, seatbelt, and Lego minifigure, but as it sits now with wheels and axles, the car comes in at 4.06 ounces and a balance point just rear of center.

After seeing how you did your weight pocket on the miniature 2x4 for the Pinewood Derbymobile.

I wish now that I would have done something along that line for a weight pocket
for this crazy car idea I had of building the Derby Worx Pro Axle Jig car.

Call this a crazy design .. if you will.
But the axle could act a pin on the front left side of the axle jig car for changeing up
the wheel base locations to stock or extended.
Just by pulling the axle & wheel and sliding the jig forward & re-installing the wheel & axle.
