Carl Casper's 1969 Phone Booth Model T.

Post by whodathunkit »

Sometime back in June of last year I asked Andy & Noah Holzer if they could help me out with a car pattern for building this very car.

To my surprise they were very helpful with providing a pattern I could work with and the directions for the MPC model for this car showing some details. I just never got around to building the car until a few days ago...It's still a work in progress as I've got the motor and headlights to go.

I have changed up a few things to the car from the pattern, like making the wheel base a little bit longer.

Anyway, it's been a fun project car so far.
Here's a few photos to enjoy:

Thanks for the pattern, Andy & Noah!
Mark.

Thanks BallBoy,
Back in it's day.. It was the show car of all show cars & it even had a model car modeld after it.
Today it's looked at as a wacky show car by some.
Funny how telephone booths are even looked at as a thing from the past with all the cell phones now.
Guess it's just one way to look at why talking or texting on phone while driveing is not a good thing!
Just one of the reasons of why I wanted to try and build this show car.
And maybe because I've never seen a Pinewood derby car built after it as well.

Whoda.

My first thought was that a TARDIS car should be blue--a blue police box, more specifically. But then I looked up the prototype that this car is based on. Wow...

Thanks for sharing!

Darin, not to go :offtopic: here!
But the frist time I ever seen or heard of TARDIS police box was from the movie Doctor Who...
best I can recall It was called the TT Capsule and it was something to the like's of a time machine.

(Is this what you meant when you said you looked up it's prototype?)

There were also many different desings & styles during the 1930's ..
TARDIS like police boxes started appearing all over the UK.

One of the big differences was in Glasgow were the police boxes were red & and not blue.
And by the 70's most of the police boxes had been decommissiond due to the Introduction..
Of Two Way Radio. WOW.. in deed. ;)

I was using "prototype" in the sense that model railroaders use it. That is, a prototype is the real-world object (train, car, whatever) that your model object is based on.

So in this case, I looked up photos of Carl Casper's "Phone Booth" car. That car (the prototype) is impressive. And so is your derby model of it.

Mark,
I had totally forgot about those plans until I saw the title of this post. You did an excellent job of re-creating this car in pinewood derby scale!

For the others that have never seen the original, here are some pictures I dug up while I was doing the design for Mark’s plans. The first is the show car and the second is the model box from MPC, back when there was a model for this car.

Excellent job Mark,

I tryed to put all the little details into the car that were seen in the car pattern as well.
Though it's not 100% perfect to all the details seen between the show car or to the model of it.
It was a fun car to build hope you like how it turned out.

Darin,
Is this that cool looking Tardis Police box pinewood derby car.. you were talking about.
Seen in this Link: (WOW!) 8)
