ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby Car Photos

Post by rcmoeur »

The 2017 ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby (the District-level event for Four Peaks and Thunderbird Districts of Grand Canyon Council) was held on April 22. As part of the registration process, we take photos of each car (4 of each car - front left, front right, rear left, rear right). I've finally wrangled the photos and placed them on a webpage - take a look at:

Lots of great cars there!

Very nice presentation, as always! Question, though: Do you think there's any information risk with putting the boys' full names on a publicly available site?

Never been raised as an issue. No photos of the actual boys or PII, other than the Pack number (which really doesn't narrow things down much). Conversely, the advantage of assigning names to car photos is the boy has his name attached to his creation, (hopefully) creating pride of ownership.

Richard, I notice that nearly every car looked like a race car and was built following science. This could not have been an accident. Do you hold a workshop, or workshops, and teach the Physics of the Pinewood Derby?

Great Display. Job Well Done.

This year, I was directly involved with only two of the cars (mine and my son's - both from previous years in a category permitting older cars). I held workshops for my son's old Pack in prior years, but not this year, but it looks like they haven't forgotten everything. :) My co-chair occasionally holds workshops, but I couldn't say which Packs were reached this year. I think the build quality is due to the improved dissemination of good info (such as this site and the Thorne book) - I really can't take any credit for it. Note that this is a District-level event spanning two Districts covering much of the north Phoenix metro area (and beyond) - my interaction with the boys is mainly limited to visiting their Pack Derbies to publicize the District event (of course, by this time, the cars are already built).
