Going Out on a High Note
Going Out on a High Note
My son had his final Pinewood Derby this past Saturday and he was again victorious!!!
The pack had 61 cars enter and we ran a 72-car Stearns fragment with 20 rounds. He came in second in one heat, but won all of the others. From the Stearns frag, we take the top 6 for a CPN 12 heat final and he was undefeated in the finals. This is exactly the same as last years results: 32 heats. one second place finish and 31 firsts.
I am both quite happy/proud of my son's accomplishments and sad that this chapter is ending. We had a great time planning, building and racing Pinewood cars. Thanks again to all of the members of this forum for sharing their knowledge and experience to help us go fast.
Good Luck and Go Fast!!

Congrats PWTom and son!
Now you can volunteer to help all of those single parent Cub Scouts or even those that just need help building their pinewood derby cars. I hope to get my yearly pinewood derby car building fix again this year by offering to help all who ask (second year without a Cub Scout). In this manner you will be able to be a Pinehead - otherwise you must turn in your cap and secret decoder ring...

You could go to work for Max Vel or Warp or open up your own PWD shop now (laughing!).

Re: Going Out on a High Note
The builders who race at WIRL every month seem to have a lot of fun. Maybe you could try that.
Re: Going Out on a High Note
Time does fly. We have a great picture where we took my son's five cars and put them on the track for a final run. It was amazing seeing five years of his work from a fairly crude Tiger Cub car to a fairly slick Webelos II car all racing together. Perhaps just as amazing is that the Tiger Cub car held it's own against the others. I think we had much more luck than skill that year!!!!
Thanks again everybody!!

PWTom --
Congrats to another fine showing! I'll bet some of the other Cubs (and parents) won't be so sorry to see you move on!
My son graduated from Cubs to Scouts three years ago, and I moved from Den Leader of 12 to Scoutmaster for 100 -- but I stay active with Pinewood Derbies by hosting a pair of Workshops for the Pack, and serving as one of the race officials (we have five days of den races and a "finals" race!). All that, and this forum, almost take the place of working on cars with my son and competing with the other racers. Okay, so it's not even close -- but better than nothing!

Well Done! Curious... What was your average margin of victory?
Re: Going Out on a High Note
To be honest, I was so busy scoring the overall race I don't know that I saw many of the main heats. In the finals, he won typically by half a car length. His car was "pulling away" from the others on the flat. Not the fastest down the slope, but he held that speed very well.MQ1 wrote:Well Done! Curious... What was your average margin of victory?
