The motor hums and I can nudge it in either direction by spinning the motor pulley. Not very safe. Maybe one of the coils is fried. I've never tried to drill with it to see if it has any power.
Bingo!!!

I know it's an ancient thread, but I came across it when I was searching for other stuff, and it hit home.

Last year I bought the Pinewood template, and some Graphite from a hardware store. Used a friends Bandsaw and drill press and wifes kitchen scale. Built 2 cars in 36 hours, race the next night.
Kids picked templates, did sanding and decals, but because of time I ended up doing too much.

This year I am the Troop Scouter, Quartermaster, Cookie @ Cub Camp.
I already have :
small table saw
Dremels (2)
Torches for melting
files
Cordless Drills
Wood Lathe
2x72 Belt Grinder (Way too aggressive for kids to be near)

For our Cub Pack/Scout Troop, I have aquired so far since November:
Drill Press, bench mount
9" Rockwell Bandsaw
Rockwell Oscillating Sander
80+ sheets Sandpaper
4 KubKar kits (for "testing" ;) )
4 Scout Truck kits (for "testing")
3 sets of legal Pit Kits (3 wheels and axles each )
1 set BSA orange wheels
3 different types of dry lubricants
150+ lbs of wheel weights for cleaning/melting :shhh:
Angle Iron for weight mold
4 small carpenter squares for layout
Whitening toothpaste :D
Pencils
Pipe Cleaners
Pinewood Designs book
Pinewood Speed Secrets Book
Literally hundreds of pages, and pictures saved to my hard drive
And most recently a complete set of Derby Worx tools thanks to RacerX and his Workshop Giveaway

My friend, your cause is lost! No 'twelve step plan", no in-depth counseling, no aversion therapy is gonna cure you! Ain't it great! :)

I'm in just about as deep as y'all.
But I've been gradually building the Workshop since 2008.
I'm glad there's no cure in sight.
My wife started a new support group... Widows of the Pinewood Derby.

we got in through awana grand prix just last May. I had never built a derby car before, but through some basic common sense stuff, my boys finished 1st and 2nd. (competition was weak) :shake: That lead to a bunch of us dads starting a club of our own and having a couple races. so far I haven't lost. :bigups: http://www.burgessroadsters.org Trying to grow it into a local thing where we can get together once a month or so to race the latest creations. Hard to make those connections as we are not in scouts. Anyway, I had a lot of tooling already like:
drill press
miter saw
2 dremels
cordless drill
coleman stove (4 melting lead)
lots of various drill bits

but then I bought:
used scroll saw
bunch of tungsten
needle file set
more drill bits
hub tool
axle puller
wheel shaver (not so good on awana wheels)
various squares

I really want a precision drill press. Coming up on the next grand prix for the awana kids. Our newly formed adult group is going to host some workshops so hopefully they will have better competition this year.
If you don't take your fun seriously, who will?

After our First season I bought a pro axle press, mini-lathe, pro axle tool, pro mandrel, bore polishing kit, hub tool, and axle guide etc. Along with a coping saw and rasp :shhh: . Already had drills. After our second season I realized real power tools were in order. I then purchased a drill press and band saw. I also purchased a 20ft plastic test track  . Next i acquired a belt sander, vise, quick clamps, and purchased a Dremel and accessories  . Also got a ammo can full of fishing sinkers and battery terminals for melting. We have a collection of extra wheels and axles as well. With my son in Tiger cubs, my 3 girls GS Juniors, and all in AWANA. I'm in for the long haul.

WoW!!!! I sure am glad I'm not the only PWD junkie.

Alot of the stuff already listed, purchased in the last 30 days. Except the mini lathe and test track/timer. I need those bad or so I keep telling my wife.

This thread should be spouse blocked.

I don't think I would live too long if I ever decided to write it all out. My wife would kill me.

The hardest part is when your PWD "career" is over, what do you do with all of the PWD specific tools, extra parts, and track & timer? Many of them I custom designed and had made at work. I don't want to sell them quite yet, our daughter might have a Girl Scout PWD, but her Troop vanished this year. I just know if I sold everything I'll regret it!!

If the boys stick with it, I'll have 4 more active years.

But we only do Pack/Troop race , and now the District race in Jan-Feb.

But the workshop part is what I love, so once I get set up, I'll probably still offer to have groups come in for it.
