Say Laserman, Welcome Back!
& thanks for posting more photo's and info to the topic.

Like Sporty.. Wow!! sign me up for a set of weights as well.. (& Thank you for the offer!)

I have a Question
With this type of tungsten weight set up do you run it with the heaver wheels or light weight wheels
Are you seeing any issues with it useing the lighter weight wheels as far as tread flex and rubbing.
Seems to me that why alot of times you see the lighter weight wheel ran inside out on the rears.
So is type of weight working well inside the lighter weight wheels as well?
What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?

I think this is a great idea, will you talk to randy ?

I did have an email exchange with him about it. He did have some concerns about trying to do a comparison test. I threw out a few ideas on that. I think that he is mulling it over.

Thanks Graceman!

That is great! Thank you so much for reaching out to Randy.

I have not been able to think up a way of testing these weights in a side by side comparison, but if it can be done then no doubt he will be the one to find the way.

Thanks Mark,
It is good to be back here!
I have not tried the weights with anything other than stock wheels or wheels that have been reduced to 2g.

My thought is that if the wheel is too thin to run reversed for normal weighting it would be the same for this weighting system.

If installed using the centering jig the weights will not rub, regardless of how much material has been removed from the wheel.

I have heard that once wheels get lighter than say 1.5g they need to be reversed as they will start to buckle at the transition, but I have little experience with these lighter wheels.

Hi Sporty,

Yes. I purchased a small laser cutter about 14 years ago for my job.

Almost all of my car bodies are cut with the laser cutter.

Thanks again,
Joe

One thing that I would like see tested is if there is really a performance gain in having the weight in the wheels as opposed to a normally weighted car with lightweight washers mounted to get the aerodynamic benefit of not having the open wheel cavities. That is assuming that both car bodies have the same frontal cross section.

This reduces micro vibrations. And provides wider weight distribution.
Congrats to those who came up with, tried it and got it to work and share it.
Great to see new thinking and new ways. I only ever tried to glue cubes before or after on the side of the wood.

This is great in my view of it.

I'm sure its faster, so I've heard and believe some are winning with it.
Wonder if it provides a big increase ? Or just another small increase ? But I'm sure its a increase none the less.
I
Tungsten puma weights , hope I can mention that, see they are for sale.
Our other people selling them or something like it ?

Anyone got some, can post pictures of there weight ?
Does washers or the tungsten . I assume the center while is big enough not to cause any canting issues ?

Hi Sporty,

Myself and a fellow league racer named Corvid are big fans of your theories concerning micro vibrations.

We came up with a slightly more elaborate name for them "micro vibrational detail" that we abbreviated to MVD

Down 4 Derby has claimed that his cars run much quieter with this weighting system.

It may be a result of less MVD

With so many potential benefits it may take a series of tests to figure out how, why, and which ones are making the cars quicker.

Prior to installing the weights onto the car, I have clamped down the recessed portion of the weight into a vise and smacked it with a hammer to get a clean break.

This allows for a good view of the inner wheel by those doing inspections before a race.

Best regards,
Joe

Completely off topic I know, but is it possible to "drill" a usable axle/nail hole with a laser? Just curious...

Hi FS

Not that I am aware of.

The thing about the laser is that it focuses at a specified distance. After its focus point the beam begins to spread. The further from the focus point the less accurate. In other words the hole may start in the right spot/ diameter but by the time it gets to the bottom of the hole it will be off.

Please post pictures of best and worst examples! (I've experience with breaking cast (pure) tungsten, but not sintered tungsten. Pure tungsten (albeit different shape) did not break cleanly for me using the method you describe.)

Just a word of warning for those considering these types of weights ...

Our Northern Star council rules has the following wheel rule:

All lettering and numbering, both inside and outside, must remain complete and visible.

One intent of this rule is to allow inspection of the inside of the wheel to detect lightened wheels. Another important note is that the NSC does not condone tear downs of any kind to enforce rules, so we won't be pulling wheels to inspect the inside lettering. For these reasons, the NSC will not be allowing these or any inner wheel weights that conceal the inner lettering and numbering.

I can only speak to the NSC rules and interpretations. However, I doubt our conclusion will be unique. So ... In other words:

CHECK YOUR RULES BEFORE YOU USE THESE WHEEL WEIGHTS!!!

Joe and I have already discussed alternative designs that would pass the NSC rules.

Hi LB
Good call!
I would not want folks getting DQed
There is a scout version in the works and I certainly have appreciated the insight you have given me pertaining to the NSC rules
The next tungsten shape should comply fully.
In the meantime I can modify these existing weights or give instruction as to how to DIY
Many thanks,
Joe

Say Joe, ( Laserman.)

I'm really takeing a likeing to the ideas seen in some of your earlier prototypes!
Sometime back I posted this crazy idea for a wheel spoke painting jig.

check this out!

So I can't waite to see what ideas you'll come up with or use for the scout version weight.
;)

Whoda.

Dang Mark!

That is brilliant!

Did you make a wind deflector from the side wall of a BSA wheel?

How does that jig work?

I always felt that out of everyone I met on these forums, I connected with you best.

Sorry to have to be the one to break the news to you.

Sincerely,
Joe

Hold on. I think I understand...

First of all let me commend you on your photography.
Particularly the first photo.

You put a wheel in the jig and sand it until it is almost thru the inner wall?

Then sand off the hub?
