Derby Monkey Garage has just been awarded as an authorized Revell Pinewood Derby Products Dealer.
As many of you know Revell and the BSA reached an agreement that allows Revell to manufacture and distribute official Pinewood Derby products and only Revell makes kits and accessories officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America.
The products offered by Revell are entry level stuff... but is perfect for the dads and lads getting ready for their scout derby. See the line at http://www.revell.com/pinewood-derby/
It will be interesting to see how the pack rules will change over time regarding the use of precut bodies and kits now that the BSA are now licensing their own.
Stay tuned...

Re: Revell Pinewood Derby Products
Not too long ago BSA was selling pre-cut stock car kits, so this is not a first. If it is licensed by the BSA, it wouldn't make sense to prohibit them. I'm not a fan of pre-cuts, but there still is enough to do on the cars to get them race ready.Derby Monkey wrote:It will be interesting to see how the pack rules will change over time regarding the use of precut bodies and kits now that the BSA are now licensing their own.

Body:
The main body structure must be made of wood. Cars that were purchased completed may not be used. If the builder lacks
the resources to cut out a car from a stock block of wood, attendance at a workshop(den/pack/district/council) is strongly
encouraged. Alternately, a pre-shaped block may be purchased to be used with the stock BSA Wheels and Axles.

Re: Revell Pinewood Derby Products
I am torn over the use of precut bodies. Many families do not have the tools to cut a car. It is a help to them to have a precut body.. but how hard is it to cut out a wedge? It is not fancy, but a wedge works.
We had one of those Revell Luge Racers at our District Derby. I thought it was neat, but now I see it was bought.

So what do you tell little Billy that wants something other than a wedge?tmbnorm wrote:I am torn over the use of precut bodies. Many families do not have the tools to cut a car. It is a help to them to have a precut body.. but how hard is it to cut out a wedge? It is not fancy, but a wedge works.

I have worked with intercity kids that are doing good to have parents let alone someone that will help them with cutting out a simple wedge. These kids are doing good just to be able to come to a race and participate. Simple things, like hand tools & skills, that many of us take for granted are getting harder to find with cub parents.
Times are changing and families are no longer defined or function the same way they used to. Being a cubmaster, I get to see all kinds of single moms/dads and even grandparents raising kids that need this kind of thing. With ANY pre-cut, you still have lots of work to do. Pre-cuts just take out one of the hardest parts for SOME folks.
I guess if the BSA is cool with it, then we should be as well.....
