Race Display Stand

Post by ah8tk »

I wanted to have a way to display the pinewood derby cars at the race so they would be easy to identify the car owner and if the car was indeed out racing (when you were trying to find it for the next race). Our packs old way to display and move cars around is a divided box:

Last year derbyspeed had posted a nice stand he had built with flags to note where the car was supposed to park --see post here--. So I set out to design a new Race Display Stand (I don’t seem to have the ability to come up with cool names for stuff, like derbyspeed). I wanted the Race Display Stand to store fairly compactly, so I sat down with my computer to design:

Here is a picture with a car positioned with the designation flag:

It is built out of 1/2” MDF. MDF is great to work with because it is very stable (as long as you keep it dry), and it looks great when you paint it. The trouble is when you use latex paint to seal a cut end it can expand as it is absorbing the paint. It took a while to build (a lot of time waiting for the paint to dry, before you can go to the next step), it is finally complete. Here are some pictures showing it going from storage to display:

I can’t wait to use it in a couple of weeks.

Impressive. Much nicer than our slats of wood laid out on a table.

Here is a photo of the Race Display Stand in use. It worked real well to locate the cars and everyone thought it looked great.

I think we will have to use shorter masts on the flags next year (they are currently 4 ½”, I think we could lose an inch without any trouble).

This is by far the BEST pack display stand I have ever seen. Would you please e-mail me your plans? My son is crossing over this year, and I'd like to build it and leave it for our pack to have for years to come. Thanks for your consideration. Patrick
