With the rank racing, a car would race every other race or so for about 20 minutes, but then would have to be entertained in other ways for the rest of the night.
Starting with GPRM V8, the software can collate each of the race group schedules into a single Master Schedule. Then you can run alternating heats for each race group, but racers only race within their race group. V9 improved upon this by spreading out the heats for smaller groups better, so they don't finish too soon. You can set the minimum number of heats to run before alternating to the next race group, for more flexibility.

I can personally attest to the value of a master schedule, interweaved schedule of heats.
