Way cool. They came out great! A possible idea for holding the car. Last year I made up some PWD stand kits for the boys to do for their Craftsman badge. I designed the stand in such a way that the boys had to do some drilling, putting in a screws, some small nails etc. Cost was pretty reasonable. Because I think that cars look neater when they are at an angle and slightly tilted, I had to come up with a way to keep the cars from rolling off of the stand. I used the little spacers that tile layers use. One in front of one of the front wheels and one in back of one of the back wheels. They are relatively inexpensive, I think a billion of them cost a buck and when painted black they look like actual wheel chocks.

The L-shaped car mounting bracket is offset to allow a car with just about any sensible CM location to be mounted.

Well, that was just it. At the time I started making these My sons car did not have a sensible CM. :D We figured this out when we did our test runs in the track and corrected, but at the time the CM was probably only 5/8" in front of the rear axle.
5/8" sounds sensible to me. :)
Just looked at some of the plaques on my family room wall... the edge of the L-shaped bracket is approximately on the centerline ... which means that the front edge of the rear wheel would be on the plaque centerline. That front edge is just under 5/8" from the axle center!

For the rare car that pushed the envelope farther, he could knock the edge off the top inside edge of the bracket.

But, the important thing is that what you did worked. Made each of the boys feel special!

Darin,

Thanks for the info on Little Awards. We used them for our Raingutter Regatta race patches this year. Just got them in this last Monday and they look great! Although they are not embroidered, the fact that we can get our Pack name and a year on them more than make up for it - and all at $1.50 each.

Just wanted to update y'all. This year our Pack decided to try aaatrophies.com (or it could be aaatrophy.com). We were blown away. Free shipping and a discount based on the size of our order. Received the same week order placed. Free engraving. They looked fantastic. We also saved about 30% over what we spent last year. Best of all - the boys loved 'em!

Looks like it was http://aaatrophy.com/ (since aaatrophies.com doesn't seem to exist).

Ah, but http://www.aaatrophies.com/ does exist (and seems more likely than http://aaatrophy.com/ to me).

We just purchased out trophies from:

http://stores.ebay.com/Trophies-Unlimit ... idZ2QQtZkm

The cost for 3 trophies was $12 plus a flat rate shipping for trophies and medals. We purchased medals ( 3 for each Scout rank) with engraving for $2.25 each to keep costs down. In addition to this, we are awarding certificates to all participants along with a Cub Scout particiapant ribbon for each Scout. We are also giving 1st thru 6th place and 6 honorable mention stock rosette ribbons from Dinn Brothers. The cost for these was $1.60 each.

In total, for 34 Scouts in our new pack, we are awarding 12 medals, 3 trophies, 12 "best design" ribbons, 34 certificates for various designs, 34 participant ribbons, and 34 laminated drivers lincenses. Each participant will have a minimum of a certificate, participant ribbon, and drivers license to show for building their cars. The cost for all this was near our budget of $88.

In addition to this, we have made a perpetual plaque out of walnut and are having the plaque engraved for the fastest rank/den. The cost for this was $8.00 in materials.

In total, we are under $3.00 per participant on a tight budget. With the exception of the perpetual plaque, everything was ordered by mail or over the Internet. I hope this infomation helps.

Our boys really worked hard and sold ALOT of popcorn so we splurged a little this year. Here is what we got:

5 sets of this:
http://www.trophyoutlet.com/catalog/setf_3851286.htm

We chose to have a crossed flag medalion between the eagles wings instead of the year. The year was placed on the engraving.

and 1 set of this:
http://www.trophyoutlet.com/catalog/setd_3851284.htm

derby figure is this one:
http://www.trophyoutlet.com/catalog/16rac13_3856191.htm

You can't see it in the pic but the car has etched flames on the top and sides. Fantastic! I'll try to take a pic and post it.

Total ran us less than $150.00. Trophies are great and all I have to do now is assemble them.

I think the boys will be really surprised. In previous years, only the Overall Pack Champion got a trophy.

We gave everyone a medal for participating. The boys loved these:

Ranman,

We are using trophies from TrophyOutlet.com for the District Pinewood Derby Race that our Pack is hosting this year. We went with Set A's (1st - 3rd) for each Rank and a 1st - 5th place set of Set Q's for overall fastest. Set Q shows only 1st - 3rd on the web site but after calling and speaking to Ralph the owner (just nice gentleman), he cut us a deal for the 4th and 5th place trophies. Assembly was not a problem once you figure out what goes where. Great people to deal with and good looking trophies at a great price - we will recommend them to other Packs and will use them again.

For our Pack, we are once again building our own awards. The race is only 9 days away, so as soon as the rain stops; I gotta go drill some holes!

Very nice indeed! Can you post a picture or e-mail one? What topper did you use? Column color?

Everyone loved them at our Pack PWD! We saved over $100.00 when compared to our local trophy dealer and the trophies from TrophyOutlet were twice as tall. We will use them again next year and shipping was very fast.

Ranman,

I should get pictures of them before they all go away to thier new owners... but I would have to find a way to post the pictures. I believe I have a site to host the pictures but just need to sit down and have it done. Too much going on right now: we just got done with hosting the District Leader Banquet, our Pack PWD race is 9 days away (homemade awards and trophies are not done!) and the District PWD race that we are hosting is two weeks after our Pack's race! Whew! So sometime after all this I need to do whatever needs to be done to get some pictures out here of trophies and Pinewood Derby/Raingutter Regatta related items.

Forgot to add that we also using custom designed patches from Little Awards for our Pack and District Pinewood Derby races too!
