As an additional resource, my Toys R Us has been seelling wooden toys from the Disney "Cars" movies. While the toys themselves may not get good reviews, I think they are good Pinewood Derby references.

If you go and check them out, they provide good references about how to cut car shapes from wood. They look good, but without all the intricacies of cutting every curve or sharp angle.

One kid came with his Mom to the workshop, asked to make the Francesco Bernoulli car (had a picture from the movie).
No, he ended up with a fast wedge shape instead. They didn't have the time or resources to pull it off.
With the wooden car in hand, maybe try one?
My wife started a new support group... Widows of the Pinewood Derby.
