I love Wikipedia too. Our school system doesn't think it is a reliable source of info for our students, so they block the whole darn thing. Web filters can be a two-edged sword.

Wikibooks even has a full "How to build a Pinewood Derby Car" book on the subject:

Re: Pinewood Derby is in the Wikipedia
My son did a project about pinewood derby and got hammered at a science fair for listing wikipedia in his bibliography. He thought the judge was a professor from a nearby university and was confused why he was told very bluntly never to use wikipedia as a reference and that ANYONE can change a wiki.dstory wrote:Our school system doesn't think it is a reliable source of info for our students, so they block the whole darn thing.
I explained that NO source is 100% reliable, but the important thing is to verify the information from different sources when you can.
So, now, he starts his projects at wikipedia and uses the references listed on wikis as his source material. He thinks it is funny someone so smart (the prof) could be so dumb.
Re: Pinewood Derby is in the Wikipedia
I think Wikipedia is a great starting point, and I agree you should use multiple sources for ANY reference.
Seems the teacher is being harsh to try and outlaw a source because it can be wrong.
ANY source can be wrong.
But, because it is so good and so easy to use... Wiki seems to have become a posterchild for teachers...
all I can understand with this is perhaps if the goal is to teach someone to properly research something... then a "one stop power source" that is easy and doesn't require knowing the Dewey Decimal system at your local library as you spend 12 hours with 3X5 index cards taking quote and forming your bibliography... can be viewed as defeating the purpose... if your purpose is to keep folks in the paper age when the electronic is clearly the future.
Perhaps this teacher had to walk to school when they were a student...
uphill, both ways...
in the snow...
in July...
and they LIKED it because they didn't know any better and "folks were tougher then" and "these kids today"... blah blah blah blah blah...

How far? While the amount seems to vary somewhat, I believe it is commonly described in terms of miles ROTFL.Teeeman wrote:Perhaps this teacher had to walk to school when they were a student...
