Are girls better builders than boys at PWD?

Post by TAL »

Many cub scouts have been through the pinewood derby scene and have came out on top.

I have attended many pinewood derbies at churches, local races, etc.

It often seems that even when they are the minority, a girl or girls usually finish at least in the top three if not dominating the whole field.

This seems to be pretty much in general especially when it is a kinda built'em and race'em kinda thing.

Oh yea, girls often seem to have a better looking car most of the time.

I think in contrast to modern society.

We are in a visual age of dawn. Women tend to be more moved and motivated by imagery.

The home shopping network comes to mind. lol

Men are said to me more stimulated by visual.

I belive when it comes to the battle of the sexes.

I feel both are equal, but certainly their our certain abilities and qualities adhered to each species.

But it can also come down to good parents, looking at the environment at which such said forth activities are taking place aswell.

I do think that having girls involved in a race raises the bar on creativity. I've been to many Cub Scout races and haven't seen as creative of designs as the Awana races that I have been to. In a boys only race I tend to see more "car" designs as opposed to "non-car" designs. That is not to say that boys can't come up with a creative design. I just think that having girls involved challenges the boys to think "out side of the block".

I agree with Randy that having girls in the race raises the bar. I teach middle school math, and the girls (overall) are consistently better academically than the boys. At my level, the girls seem to be able to stay on task better and are generally more mature than the boys (in general).

Competition is a good thing.

This is totally true for my daughter who has spent her entire life having to lock elbows with her three brothers. She is much more focused, knows what she wants and doesn't want anyone helping her (if she can avoid it). Her cars haven't been faster than the fastest boy, but they are right in the mix.

My vote is for the girls... they follow directions better at that age... when you show them all how to do something (eg sand a wheel), the girls do it... generally the boys don't pay attention... then sit in the corner and sand one side of the wheel completely flat, making D shaped objects and then like to say, "what? that's what you told us to do"... OK, I exaggerate but you get the point.

OK...

This year's state race
1st, 2nd, and 3rd were all girls.

Last year's state race
1st, 2nd, and 3rd were all girls.

Two years ago...
1st, 2nd, and 3rd were all girls.

Anyone else see a pattern here?
