Hot off the press !! colored wheels coming
Hot off the press !! colored wheels coming
This is sorta a double post as I initially posted elswhere-
However, This is hot off the press-
I spoke with BJ Ryan & also Kahoot.
A gentleman named Mr. Nelson will be in charge of alot of this next year !
As Mrs. Ryan will no longer be in the same department.
In the middle of next year, after 2009 pinewood derby season.(for most of us)
You will see colored wheels and a new design of the wheels !
My understanding is that they want a more consistent molded wheel and faster wheel design.
So look for those older wheels to be fazed out sometime next year.
The colors that are approved and will be out-
Red,Yellow,Blue,Orange. black will still be sold also from my understanding.
I do not think the wheels will come in the kit, they likely will be sold in 4 packs.
They are also re-doing there molds for the new wheel.
So this is a year away, however it is approved and going to happen.
Sincerely,
Sporty

Re: Hot off the press !! colored wheels coming
Now only if BSA would ditch the nails and go with machined pins like in the Awana kits. With those, there is no need to file or sand, just polish. To me, axles are a much bigger issue than changing the wheel design.

Randy,
thats a great point to be made ! I know they do come and view the forum as I asked them today and yesterday.
I only wish I had thought about asking them about that.

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't know who these people are. Are these colored wheels BSA wheels? My son would love to be able to do something different with the look of the wheels but we have one of those "light sanding and nothing else" rules.sporty wrote:This is sorta a double post as I initially posted elswhere-

Re: Hot off the press !! colored wheels coming
these will be official BSA, pinewood derby wheels !!
Mrs. Ryan is in part on the national council for cub scouts, handling the pinewood derby area of the kits.
Mr. Nelson is / will be in that position next year.
Kahoot is the mfg or sub mfg of the kits.
Unless your child is a wolf or younger, and your pack holds there pinewood derby race before Mid summer of 2009, you will not likely be able to get the wheels and use them, as your child may age out before then.maybe webelos 1 ? likely see them for sale for the 2010 pinewood derby season and on.
M
(most packs have there races from anywhere from Jan to May).

Thanks so much for the info. I have one of the little ones (just made wolf) so we should have these for our Jan 2010 season. I have four more years to play

Sporty,
I'm already thinking of designs! Oldest is a Bear turning webelos, but next is a Tiger this year, and third boy enters kindergarden in the fall!!!

Very, very cool!
I know I read car adds about making tires chemically treated to not only appear in reds, blues (etc.) but to make COLORED SMOKE during burnouts...
(tires for real cars)
I'm too old to dig "drifting" as a sport... to me racing is to get to the finish line the fastest and simply put, spinnin' ain't winnin'...
and I sure don't dig subjectively scored things... I like NUMBERS no artsy fartsy can argue with...
but the idea of making a red cloud during a burnout at the dragstrip in my Camaro has a really sinister appeal...
solid black wedge shaped loud mean machine making a ton of red smoke...
well, on the other hand, so far as colored tires... the BMX crowd tried that in the 80's and soon as a colored wheel gets dirty they look very, very dingy...
so unless you clean your tires more than the paint and Armor All it 'til there is no hope of traction anymore...
well, you get the idea...
they have to work first, look good 2nd for someone who is really racing...
but for PWD, this is a WAY cool idea!!!!
('til we put graphite all over them, hahahahahahaah!)

Then somebody will just have to come up with colored graphite to mix and match with the wheels...Teeeman wrote:...but for PWD, this is a WAY cool idea!!!!

Knowing one of my sons, he's going to want four different colored wheels on the car!! LOL!
Hmmmmm colored graphite...... blue wheels, yellow graphite, turns the wheels green during the race!

What I reeeaaalllllly need is some colored graphite that matches the color of the carpet in the boys room where the test track is set up.3 Cub Dad wrote:Knowing one of my sons, he's going to want four different colored wheels on the car!! LOL!

Or maybe the color of the dining room table?... perhaps I'll get out of the dog house (Woof, Woof!)

Re: Hot off the press !! colored wheels coming
lol, I got enough stains and messes from projects,
I am just glad I was able to find out and share with everyone about the colors coming and the new wheels.
Especially for those who stock up on kits. I would think that there might be less large kits or wheel bought come Early next year.
But that will also depend on when they officially come out and announce everything.
I gathered by the phone call they want to reduce the possible mix and match of the old and newer style of wheel coming.
Perhaps keeping vendors and bulk kit owners and packs that have still cases of kits to unload to the kids. Also perhaps giving them time to keep a closer eye on the current kits in stock and it might even have to do with current contract and amounts with the kit mfg.
I know using the graphite on the recent rsn colored wheels, did make the wheels look less red in color (I did a set in red) however, A smudge of darkness was still seen.
But it did not overall lessen the coolness of colored wheels.

A little graphite on your wheels should be an honor, like all that red adobe clay under your truck after racing the Baja 1000. Proof of the performance- made to run!

lol! What noxious effect would it have? Carbuncles on the aluminum track? Sarcoma in the joints?Stan Pope wrote:But watch out for the graphite with Red Dye #7!Go Bubba Go wrote: Then somebody will just have to come up with colored graphite to mix and match with the wheels...
