Pinewood Derby: Then and Now

Post by dstory »

I just came across a great article which highlights the difference between PWD races of yesteryear vs today. It made me laugh and reminded me of many of the ethics discussions I have read on this list. Well worth the read for any true pine-head. Enjoy!

Yep, it hit right at the core blemishes of PWD. Pretty astute observations.

Glad you liked it!

I can relate to that story. Last year our entire pack was shamefully embarrassed by two boys who built their cars with the help of their single mother.

Our pack even has a 'cut out day' at one of the leader's garages for those with no power tools or lacking knowledge/expertise on how to build a car. This woman or her boys were never there.

Their cars were simple wedges, which she cut with a hack saw. The pine was covered with small 'smilies' :) :) from being held with a C clamp while the pine blocks were cut. They were painted with latex house paint.

This year at the monthly pack meeting in November, when a date for cut out day was decided upon, a couple of us dads approached this woman and asked if she wanted to come over and maybe attempt a little 'slicker' lookin' car for her boys.

"I ain't givin' you guys any of my secrets !!" she exclaimed.

Tomorrow's derby day....... I'll be sure to give you an udate.
