Critique of Two Cars
Critique of Two Cars
My son built two cars (I actually did the cutting as I want him to leave cub scouts with all his fingers), but he did the rest of the work. I am attaching two photos and I understand neither of these is the optimal design but these are what he settled on - after-all, it is his choice - that is for most of us anyway
The blue one is a simple wedge with the bottom routed out to minimize weight in the car and is one inch high in the back. 3 oz of tungsten cylinders is added just above and placed before and after the rear axle (in front of and behind of). The COG is about 1 inch.
The second car has more gaps for air resistance, however, the back is only 0.5 inches high, it uses a tungsten slotted round at 3.25 oz, and it is placed between the axles slightly forward of center which yields a COG of 0.75 inches.
All the bells and whistles are being added (rail riding, bent axles. etc.), so which in your humble opinion should my son run? My gut says go with the smaller profile, plus it looks cooler for the kids. Comments and thanks!
