China Revell wheel vs BSA (usa)

Post by paulg »

I just bought some revell wheels for the axles and some BSA wheels for usage.
I was shocked to see the china wheels weighed 2.3 grams and the BSA wheels weighed 2.6 grams !
The run out isn't really a problem I can run a few passes with the lathe.
Has anyone else seen this ?

I've never seen China wheels being that light. I do notice the bore on the China wheel tends to be smaller then the bore on the USA wheel. Our Pack leader has a set of China wheels that were nearly perfectly round on Knott's runout gauge although they weighed 2.7 grams. I happen to have 100 sets of BSA wheels (another story) and some of them weigh 2.4 grams and some of them are nearly perfectly round. For scouts who are obsessed with speed I recommend they buy one of the preferred numbers from a vendor. Those numbers tend to be .003 or less out of round. You can also buy lathed wheels, if rules allowed, that are lathed round and nothing else done to them. Those wheels tend to be .003 or less out of round and will usually weigh about 2.4 grams.
If you have a concentricity gauge, how far out of round are your China wheels?
