Garage Workshop Primer ( opportunity to provide input )

Post by pack529holycross »

This is a chance for me to benefit from the years of experience represented on this Forum. From my photos of this years cars, it's obvious that a 8 x 8 patio is not exactly the ideal "evil lair " footprint for extensive derby car creations and other such woodworking feats.

To that end, and much to the delight of my wife and family, we are moving to a real house in a few weeks. There is a 21 x 21 garage with the homeowners leaving behind a full section of workshop type cabinets, counters, and pegboard. I am interested in gaining some insight into the "makings of an evil lair" ( garage workshop ). Here are a few of the areas I need some input on:

Basic shop tools ( brand recommendations, feature recommendations, etc ):

band saw
chop saw
table saw
sanders
drill press
airbrush
shop vac

Shop Storage ( ideas, plans, etc ):

Workbench
Lumber Storage

If you are going to go whole hog and make it into a wood workshop, take some time and run pvc around and get one of those bigger vacs to have at the end. Not the best description, but best I have this early, been up way too long already today.

You can then use hoses to the backs of each tool and be able to suck up stuff without having to move the shop vac around - looks cool. Nice setup when working correctly too.

Definitely start with tool layout and dust collection. I would recommend that the work benches be LOW - think of a 2nd grader using the tools.

You should have the workshop set up with various stations. Here are the ones that I use:
  • Design
  • Cutting with SCROLL saws
  • Sanding
  • Wheel Prep - tread/hub coning
  • Axle Prep - Burrs under the head
  • Axle Prep - Shaft cleanup and polish
  • Weighting
  • Alignment
  • Test Track
