Securing axles on a Cub Mobile

Post by *5 J's* »

I am thinking that the best way to secure axles on a cub mobile is with U-bolts.

Does anybody know a source of U-bolts with a 1/2" ID that will go over a 1/2" axle and through a 2x4? I am thinking that I would need a minimum of 2 1/2" length to go over the axle and through the 2x4 and leave enough thread for the nuts.

When we built ours I couldn't find U-bolts with a 1/2" ID long enough so I used larger ones (maybe 1" ID) and just offset the holes so they were at an angle to the axle. On another one we made I cut a groove in the bottom of the 2x4 that was 1/2" wide and about 3/8 deep to hold the axle. Then I used a U-bolt to hold the axle tight in the groove.

Our local ACE Hardware had some, but the other big box stores generally have a very limited supply on hardware like this.

I have seen several though with the ubolt at an angle like Bob describes.
