Check in / Inspection

Post by caveman823 »

Our pack used to have a simple wooden fixture to aid in quick car check in. Placing the car on the fixture quickly showed if the car had the proper clearance, length, wheel placement, etc. The fixture has dissappeared. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get plans to make another?

The pack has a new Piantedosi Aluminum track on order. This will replace our 20 something year old wooden track. The duct tape and bailing wire wasn't working anymore.

I wish I had the same thing! I've seen a few boxes on eBay but no plans. We have been using the Alignment Tool I picked up from Maximum Velocity. I think it is made by Pine-Pro. You have to do several measurements instead of one quick glance but it works pretty good.

I made a box up last year but I lost it while helping at the district race. I made a drawing for it and can pass that on. The open ended box was made with 1 x 4 cut down to 3" (our max height). The internal dimensions of the box were 2 13/16" x 7 1/16" to check the 2 3/4" width & 7" Length. I am not sure if I should have left the 1/16" clearence or not but you could sit the box over the car and if it fit then it passed the dimension check.

I cut a strip of wood that was 3/8" Thick X 1 3/4" Wide. This was to check the under car clearence and the witch between wheels. Before I attached this strip of wood to the side of the open box, I marked some lines to check wheel base. Our rules called for wheel base to be 4 3/8" +/- 1/8" so I marked one black line with a fine point black sharpie as a start line. Then I made two more marks, one at 4 1/4" and one at 4 1/2" and then I took a green fat point sharpie and colored this area in.

I don't know if this is like the box you are talking about or not. You had two operations to check all the physical sizes of the car then all that was left was checking the weight.

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements, let me know so I can design them in before I build my next one.

Thanks,

It doesn't sound like the fixture our pack had. I would like to see a drawing of it anyway.

Thanks,

Here are some pictures of the fixture we put together. We have made two. One for the inspection table and one for the pit table.

Sorry Guys, I missed your request for the drawing until today. PM me with an email address and I can send it to you. I have it in AutoCad 2000 or I can send it as a PDF file.

Caveman826, I like your fixture better. The plexi-glass lets you see the car better when it is in the fixture. I think I will make some modifications to mine now.

Thanks,

Caveman, I love your idea for a fixture. We used to have just a simple box that checked overall length and width. After seeing yours, I'm planning on building one just like it. I may make a couple of "tick" marks to line the axles up with to check the spacing between the front and rear axles. Great design!!
