Folks, we just had our derby and there were "official" kits made out of both balsa and ...pine!? Anyone ever heard of that? I googled and didn't find anything about pine boat kits. Was it an error? It certainly made for an interesting race...
scoutstuff.org lists the boat kits as balsa.

Did you buy the kits in bulk and distribute them, or did everyone buy their own kit? If everyone bought their own kit, then my guess would be that some bought an off-brand pine kit at the local hobby shop.

Re: Pine & balsa official kits!!!?
The pack bought most of the kits in bulk and distributed them. The few that were bought outside the pack's sale were balsa - the rest pine. Turns out the bulk kits were not as 'official' as I thought. You guessed right - they were generic hobby shop (probably like the Pinecar brand) kits.
At least I don't feel as guilty now for having used the actual BSA official (balsa) kits for my kids. They took 1st and 2nd overall and I was feeling kind of low afterwards...like we somehow "cheated" (though our pack has no rules).
thanks - keith
