2012 Realistic Car Division

Post by FIRENZE »

With 2012 about to reach the mid-point we have three project cars under construction. Photos below are of cars that were constructed for the realistic division during the past ten years. A considerable time went into the research of each of these two cars to scale wheel base, track clearance, and overall appearance to actual vehicle. This year will include a Le Mans race car, a Vintage British coupe, and a current Indy style car.

Say Tom,
How did you make the inner fender parts shown on the front fenders of this car ?
Now I really like how you did this..
Because it's something I've been wanting to try and do on some vintage car & truck fenders.
Problem is mine don't ever look or turn out looking like this one.

Sporty thank you for the comment.

Mark the inner part of the front fenders are the center/core of the body. To get the desired appearance for a car it may take several attempts with cutting, fitting, and shaping of wood pieces. I have quiet a collection of cars and trucks that did not work. This photo shows the car from a different view. The outside section of the fenders are cutout first then glued to the center body section. Next contours are carved along with the center body section. Outside corners of each fender is rounded with a combination of carving tools and woodworking files.

Thanks Tom,

Most of the cars and trucks I make with this older fender sytyle..
I just leave open showing the wheel or I have the hood covering the inner fender part.

In the 2011 do-it yourself guide by Fox Chapel books is where I've seen your cars.

Jon Deck, the magazine art director of Fox Chapel did up a MG Roadster kinda useing this
same inner fender set up for the car.

Where he cuts the hood shape down the sides of the block.
And then builds the fender boring out wheel wells with a 1 3/8'' forstner bit.
Then shapes the fender back to fit back to the hood shape of the car.

Never seen anyone do the vintage style inner fenders like you did on this car.
Talk about Realistic .. you've got my vote.
And you've got me wanting to try and do up fenders like this on my next vintage car.
