What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?
Re: Hidden-Wheel Car?
Finally got started here. We'll see if my energy holds out to actually get something built.
Paper templates:
Traced onto the balsa...won't this be fun to cut?
So much fun on the scrollsaw.
Base body and pine support structure cut.

Re: Hidden-Wheel Car?
One thing that makes shaping a little harder but helps reduce balsa from failing and chunking off due to grain direction is to get some cheap dollar store super glue (very 'watery') and saturate the points and edges that have weak grain direction and let dry... It' creates a wood & resin mesh that is a lot stronger and apparently something model plane builders do quite often...
Also something we learned on that pickup build with balsa, is for some areas (like the upper door window trim and wheel wells in the bed) it required us to make our own balsa plywood so that the grain was running in multiple directions... We just used regular wood glue thinned down a bit and brushed on very thin to create the balsa plywood...

Vk, I'm liking your idea on your Hidden -Wheel Car .. there's just something about its shape I like.
exoray , thanks for the good info on balsa. As I don't work with it much.

Re: Hidden-Wheel Car?
Well, I hit a fatal flaw in my design, in that I totally somehow didn't register that having curved pieces around the wheels was going to be a no-go, because the top needs to drop down over the wheels from above.
Duh.
Well, I'm gonna have to scrap this build for now, because our race is on Saturday. But at least I have ideas for next time I have to build a car. Might just build it sans-race sometime (after I get some more balsa wood). Already have some thoughts about things I'd do better, even though this build only got half done.
